New Little Library Opened at Rockfield

Mrs Yolande Skeete, Acting Chief Community Development Officer, has expressed deep concern about the decline in literacy in Barbados. Speaking at the launch of the newest installation of PDGFF/Massy Foundation in partnership with the Community Development Department (CDD), Barbados is Blooming Little Library ay Rockfield Community Centre, Mrs. Skeete stressed that an “inability to read translates into an inability to articulate” adding that the benefits of reading cannot be over-emphasised. Adding that “a boost in the literacy rate augurs well for the future of Barbados”.

In acknowledging the opportunities that the ‘Little Library’ brought to the northern community, Mrs. Skeete noted that it was an extra special moment at the Rockfield Community Centre as the facility had been closed for the past seven years, due to needed repairs. The repairs which were started in 2022 culminating in with the re-opening this year.

Minister Griffith and M.P. for St Lucy, Peter Phillips cut the ribbon to officially open the mini-library at Rockfield in the approving presence of students from the Ignatius Byer Primary School and their Acting Principal, Ms. Trudy Alleyne.

Approximately a dozen more installations of Little Libraries are planned for community centres across Barbados.
