Government has broken ground to construct a spanking new 7.5 million dollar state of the art community centre in the City of Bridgetown.

Acting Chief Community Development Officer, Kay Hinds says the two storey building will be located next to the London Bourne Towers and will take two and a half years to complete.

She made the comments at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the project on August 21st 2024, which was attended by the Honourable Charles Griffith, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, the Honourable Corey Layne, M.P for the City  of Bridgetown and Minister of State in the Office of the the Attorney-General, along with other government officials and residents.

Ms Hinds informed that at a Town Hall meeting in November 2022,  residents of the City gave their inputs and thumbs up to the construction of the new facility.

The Acting Chief says “the centre will house offices to be utilised by other social service agencies, six resource rooms with collapsible walls to facilitate training and development, a large balcony overlooking the existing hard court, changing rooms, built in bleachers, a studio for aspiring musicians and technicians, a larger recreational room, inclusive of stage and backstages, and two kiosks for vending facing Bay Street.”

Along with being a safe space to engage the community in training and educational programmes, the centre will also provide opportunities for community members to socialise and explore arts, craft and entrepreneurship along with engaging in relaxing and social opportunities.

In delivering his remarks, M.P for the City, the Honourable, Corey Layne urged the residents to make good use of the facility being built at Bay Street.

“I implore, I beg , I ask, I beseech the community to take full advantage, to take good care of this project, turn out , sign up and take full participation in the courses being offered. Request the rooms, meet, plan, execute, implement so that you and your children and generations to come can go from poverty to prosperity.” Minister Layne remarked.

The City M.P expressed heartfelt thanks to Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment and the Community Development Department for undertaking the project at London Bourne.

He noted that people from Pondside, Chancery Lane, Combermere Road, Wellington Street, Nelson Street, Bay Street and all the people of the City of Bridgetown will benefit from the construction of the centre. “The centre represents the building of a community and of community spirit, a building of camaraderie and a building of empowerment.”
